BRAJHA Coaching Expectations (8U–14U)

BRAJHA values the time, dedication, and leadership our coaches provide to our players and families. The following expectations are in place to ensure consistency, strong communication, and a positive development environment for all athletes.

Attendance & Communication

  • We understand that hockey is one of the longest seasons and that coaches balance family and work commitments. However, we expect that coaches do not consistently miss the same practices or games.
  • A minimum of two (2) coaches must be available for all practices and games.
  • Planned absences for personal or business reasons must be communicated at least one week in advance between the head coach, assistant coach(es), and the Coaching Director.
  • Head coaches are responsible for notifying the team manager of any coaching absences and confirming which coaches will be present.

Season Commitment

  • BRAJHA fully understands that many of our youth coaches dedicate time to family and work obligations. Open and effective communication between coaches and the Coaching Director is essential when time away is needed.
  • Coaches serving at the head or assistant level should be consistently available throughout the season to support effective planning and deliver quality coaching.
  • The season typically runs from September through March and includes:
  • At least two practice nights per week
  • Games on most weekends

Professionalism & Focus

  • Phones should be put away during practices and games. Our players deserve full attention while on the ice.
  • Coaches are expected to:
  • Respect BRAJHA rules, policies, and guidelines
  • Follow the chain of command when addressing concerns or questions
  • Conduct themselves in a responsible and respectful manner at:
  • BRAJHA facilities
  • Other rinks
  • Hotels
  • Tournaments and all team‑related events

Preparation & Continuing Development

  • Coaches are encouraged to continue expanding their hockey knowledge and bring fresh, effective, and age‑appropriate drills to practices.
  • Coaches are expected to:
  • Arrive early for practices and games
  • Come fully prepared with organized practice plans
  • Have game lineups established ahead of time

Bench & Game Management

  • Per MAHA, USA Hockey, and sanctioned tournament rules, only four (4) coaches are allowed on the bench during games.
  • If a team has more than four coaches:
  • The head coach must communicate clearly with assistant coaches regarding who will be on the bench for each game.

Certifications & Compliance

  • Coaches must remain current with all required:
  • SafeSport certifications
  • Coaching education requirements and clinics
  • Background checks
  • Coaches are responsible for staying in communication with the Coaching Director regarding renewal deadlines and compliance requirements.

Meetings & Organizational Involvement

  • Coaches are expected to attend all beginning‑of‑season meetings.
  • Coaches are encouraged to attend as many BRAJHA board meetings as possible to stay informed and engaged.
  • BRAJHA values coach input—your feedback matters in helping identify what is working well and what can be improved each season.

Our Core Focus

  • Most importantly, BRAJHA promotes:
  • Fun
  • Skill advancement
  • Continuous player development
  • Every practice should support growth, confidence, and a positive hockey experience for all players.
